English Class
As a former English teacher, I can only say that I was impressed with the level of English they were learning in the villages.

I certainly didn't come to the Philippines as superior, we just simply came to bring them Christ. I learned quite a bit from the people here, and I found most of the students to be brighter than many of their American counterparts.

ur words say it all..quite shocked because in ur mind u think in ur mind that ur better ,superiorand when u found out this case is not always true......shock of a lifetime is waht u get........well thats what an american is to the rest of the world....arrogant ,condescending with delusions of grandeur.........filipinos are the very few nations that view ur country positively but i am not one of them coz i can see through the fluff exterior......

No, no, I think you misunderstand. We all have assumptions, and they are always getting challenged. I came not knowing what to expect and discovered some very intelligent children. Your assumption is that I'm an arrogant and condescending American. Unfortunately, while I dropped my assumptions pretty quickly, you're not willing to let go of yours quite so easily...

well coz every american i meet are always like that...they think they are the greatest in the world ,that they can say and do anything against another country and its ok........well one day ur gonna get down from that imaginary tower of urs...one day........and how were those assumptions formed? from ur fellow americans who always speak ill of the philippines after plundering our resources, killing our men, erasing 400 years of our heritage from world war 2 bombings ,raping our women and after we gallantly fought a war with them which was not even ours to start with.............

I also think you're missing a major point here. I *came* to the Philippines to be challenged. I came because I wanted to know what the rest of the world is like. I wanted to understand people. I didn't want to be complacent and lazy.

And for that I get blasted? I can understand you blasting someone sitting in their comfortable American home, but I *came* to learn about Filipinos. Each and every person I met shaped my thinking in some way. And that makes me arrogant, condescending and deluded with grandeur?

I must be missing something.

good luck jesse and be more sensitive next time...enjoy the rest of your trip...

It seems as though you've got a lot of pent up aggression towards Americans, and for that I can only say I'm sorry. I suppose we'll have to leave it at that. Thanks for sharing your perspective as well...
